Dark marks or dull skin? How to tell the difference

Dark marks or dull skin? How to tell the difference

Learn how to distinguish dull skin from dark marks, why over-exfoliating can make pigmentation worse, and how to build a supportive Brighten routine with daily SPF.

Spring has a way of making skin more visible.

In clearer light, your complexion may look flat while a mark left by an old breakout suddenly stands out. The temptation is to reach for the strongest exfoliant and tackle everything at once.

That is often where routines go wrong.

Dullness and dark marks can appear together, but they are not the same concern. One is usually connected to the surface of the skin and how it reflects light. The other involves visible pigment within the skin.

Knowing which one you are looking at can help you choose a routine that supports your skin instead of overwhelming it.

What does dull skin look like?

Dullness usually affects a broader area of the complexion. Instead of one defined mark, the skin may look generally flat, tired or uneven.

Dryness, rough texture and a build-up of dead skin cells can change the way light reflects from the surface. When the surface is less smooth, the complexion appears less luminous.

You may be looking at dullness if:

  • Your whole complexion looks flat rather than one specific area
  • Your skin also feels dry, rough or uneven
  • The concern became more noticeable after winter
  • Your skin looks more radiant when it is properly hydrated

Dullness is primarily a surface concern, so hydration and appropriate surface renewal can sometimes improve visible radiance sooner than expected.

What causes dark marks on the face?

Dark marks are localised areas of visible pigmentation rather than a general lack of radiance.

They can appear after inflammation or injury, including a breakout. UV exposure and hormonal changes can also contribute. The breakout may be long gone, but the pigment it triggered can remain visible.

You may be looking at dark marks if:

  • The concern appears as individual spots or defined patches
  • A mark remains where a breakout or irritation occurred
  • Certain areas look darker rather than simply less radiant
  • The marks become more noticeable after sun exposure

In deeper skin tones, inflammation and irritation are more likely to leave persistent visible pigmentation. Avoiding unnecessary irritation can matter as much as supporting a more even-looking tone.

Why more exfoliation is not always better

When skin looks dull, exfoliation can feel like the obvious answer. Used appropriately, it can support surface renewal and help improve the appearance of rough, flat-looking skin.

More is not necessarily faster.

Over-exfoliation can disrupt the skin barrier and cause irritation. For skin already prone to dark marks, that irritation may contribute to more persistent pigmentation.

The aim is not to overpower the skin. It is to support controlled renewal without creating more irritation.

Does sunscreen help with pigmentation?

Daily sun protection matters for both concerns, particularly dark marks and uneven-looking tone.

UV exposure can deepen existing pigmentation and work against the progress you are making elsewhere in your routine.

A cool day is not necessarily a low-UV day. Temperature tells you how warm it feels, not how much ultraviolet radiation your skin receives. Check the UV index and apply broad-spectrum protection every morning.

Urban Defence SPF 50 Facial Spray is the final morning step in every Activ O₂ routine.

Protect while you correct, not after.

How long do dark marks take to fade?

There is no universal timeline.

Visible radiance may improve sooner because hydration and smoother texture change how light meets the skin. Dark marks work differently. Improvements in the appearance of pigmentation are progressive and depend on the concern, the products being used and how consistently the routine is followed.

A product promising to transform persistent pigmentation in a matter of days is worth treating with scepticism.

Changing products constantly also makes progress harder to judge. Give a suitable routine enough time before adding more.

A routine for dullness and dark marks

The Brighten Range is a Corrective System with four steps, each performing a specific role. Every formulation begins with the same common engine.

Activ O₂’s Activated Oxygen Technology is built around our bespoke ozonator and proprietary ozonation process, through which ozone is infused into extra virgin olive oil under tightly controlled conditions.

  1. Cleanse: Brighten Face Wash contains Salicylic Acid to support controlled surface renewal and help remove the build-up that can leave skin looking flat. Use it morning and evening.
  1. Hydrate: Brighten Even-Tone Corrective Serum combines High-Concentration Squalane for intense hydration with Lumiskin™, which supports progressive tone correction. It addresses the dryness that can contribute to dull-looking skin while supporting a more even-looking complexion over time.

  1. Illuminate and even: The Brighten Range includes two creams with different roles:

    • Brighten Lumiplex Face Cream uses optical light diffusion to give the complexion an immediately more luminous appearance while progressively supporting tone over time. The immediate effect is optical. It is not immediate correction of the pigment beneath the surface.

    • Brighten Radiance & Even-Tone Face Cream is the everyday leave-on option, designed to help improve the appearance of dark marks, uneven skin tone and visible hyperpigmentation with consistent use. Niacinamide supports tone uniformity and barrier function.

    • The creams are alternatives, not layers. If using both, apply Lumiplex in the morning and Radiance & Even-Tone in the evening.

  1. Protect: Finish every morning routine with Urban Defence SPF 50 Facial Spray.

    • Daily protection helps prevent new UV damage and protect the improvements you are working towards.

Keep the distinction simple.

Dullness changes how light meets the surface of the skin. Dark marks are areas of visible pigmentation within it.

Visible radiance may improve sooner. Dark marks generally require more patience and consistency.

If you have both, resist the urge to come at your skin from every direction at once. Renew, hydrate, support a more even-looking tone and protect.

Every Activ O₂ product is dermatologist tested for all skin tones and skin types, including sensitive skin. No synthetic or masking fragrances. Formulated and made in South Africa.
