Skincare routine order: what goes first, and why it matters

Which skincare step goes first? A plain guide to routine order: lighter textures before richer ones, serum before cream, and sunscreen as the last skincare step in the morning, before makeup.

Why order matters

Each step in your routine has a specific role. Following the recommended sequence helps products layer effectively: cleanse first, apply your serum before your cream, and finish with sunscreen in the morning.

Serums generally go before creams because their lighter texture allows them to spread and absorb before richer formulations are applied. Heavier or more occlusive creams can interfere with the application and penetration of products layered over them. Follow your range's recommended sequence.

The three rules

  1. Follow your range's recommended sequence, generally applying lighter textures before richer ones.
  2. Apply serum before cream.
  3. Apply sunscreen as the final skincare step in the morning, before makeup.

Morning and evening

Follow your range's sequence morning and evening. Finish with Urban Defence SPF 50 Facial Spray in the morning. For Spotless, incorporate Spotless Breakout Clearing Balm at night where needed, using either of the approaches explained below.

Need additional hydration?

Spotless Breakout Clearing Face Cream contains hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin alongside its breakout-focused benefits. If your skin needs additional hydration, Brighten Even-Tone Corrective Serum can be incorporated into your Spotless routine after cleansing and before the cream. Introduce it gradually.

Urban Defence SPF 50 Facial Spray closes every morning routine and helps protect its results. Reapply as the pack directs.

How to include the Balm in your Spotless routine

Spotless Breakout Clearing Balm contains our highest concentration of Activated Oxygen Technology. It is an intensive, targeted product for night-time use and should be applied sparingly, according to the product directions.

There are two ways to incorporate it:

  • Cream followed by targeted Balm at night: where breakouts are widespread, apply Spotless Breakout Clearing Face Cream across the face and allow it to absorb fully. Then apply a small amount of Balm directly to individual stubborn, inflamed pimples or pustules.
  • Cream in the morning, targeted Balm at night: you can also use the Face Cream during your morning routine and apply the Balm on its own to affected spots after cleansing at night.

The Balm may also be applied in a very thin layer over post-acne scars and blemishes.

Patch test before introducing it to establish your skin's tolerance, particularly if your skin is sensitive. Follow the product directions and avoid treating it as an all-over face cream.

Choosing your Brighten cream

Brighten Lumiplex Face Cream

Combines Lumisphere™ and Lumiskin™, two proprietary brightening ingredients supported by supplier clinical studies.

Lumisphere™ provides immediate optical light diffusion, softening the visible appearance of imperfections for a more luminous and even-looking complexion. It also contributes to progressive brightening.

Lumiskin™ acts on the processes involved in melanin production, helping improve the appearance of dark marks and uneven skin tone over time.

Together, they give Lumiplex its distinctive combination of immediate cosmetic enhancement and progressive tone correction.

Brighten Radiance & Even-Tone Face Cream

Combines niacinamide, kojic acid dipalmitate and an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative to help improve the appearance of dark marks and uneven skin tone through consistent use.

Niacinamide supports a more even-looking tone and helps support the skin barrier, while kojic acid dipalmitate contributes to progressive brightening. Hyaluronic acid provides hydration, giving Radiance a moisturising role alongside its tone-correcting benefits.

Radiance does not provide Lumiplex's immediate optical effect.

How to use them

Use either cream morning and evening, or choose Lumiplex in the morning and Radiance in the evening. Use one cream per application; they should not be layered together.

In the morning, follow your chosen cream with Urban Defence SPF 50 Facial Spray, the finishing daytime step that helps protect your skin and the results of your corrective routine.

Start with one concern

More than one concern? Start with the one that bothers you most and build a consistent routine around it, morning and evening. Once that's a habit, add other products thoughtfully.

How long does skincare take to work?

There is no single skincare timeline. Some visible effects may appear sooner (for example, Lumiplex's immediate luminosity comes from optical light diffusion), while other benefits develop progressively with consistent use. Timing varies according to the person, skin concern, formulation and routine.

Where we refer to findings from our four-week consumer trials, four weeks describes the period over which participants evaluated the tested routines. It is not a promise that every customer will experience the same result within that time.

Consistency before complexity. Follow your range's sequence, serum before cream, and sunscreen as the last skincare step in the morning, before makeup.
